Language support integrated into the BIMobject portal

Multi-language support will greatly enhance the experience for many users and make it easier to access and use the BIM objects published on the portal. This further supports the BIMobject mission, of being the primary global BIM object content provider for the building industry, by attracting more BIM users across the world.

The version released provides the BIM object catalogue in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and German. More languages will be added during 2013.

All search, filter and integrated functions are available in the different languages so users can use the portal in their native language or the language required for the project. All the language features are available immediately in the highly popular BIMobject APP for Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.

The integrated support for languages in the BIMobject portal also benefits international component manufacturers with a much reduced maintenance on making available country specific BIM objects. And where manufacturers have their own private clouds to publish BIMobject catalogues, they can also choose the most appropriate language.

The sky's the limit with Artlantis 4.1's new HDRI Backgrounds feature

Artlantis 4.1 continues to dazzle and amaze with a rich set of excellent new features, including the new HDRI Background environments option. We're going to break down exactly what an HDR image is, and how you can start using them today to help create an immersive, detailed environment with realistic ambient lighting effects in your renderings.

High Dynamic Range Image (or Imaging) is a method of capturing a higher range of lighting intensities in an image by taking multiple photographs of the exact same view at a variety of different exposures. Through the use of software, the photographs are merged into a single HDR image file, which can then be manipulated in different ways through the use of tone mapping. Tone mapping enables the full range of intensities in the image to be utilized at will, creating anything from a subdued effect that simply better balances the contrast between light & dark areas of the image, to an extremely exaggerated effect where the high contrast creates an otherworldly atmosphere.

In 3D rendering applications like Artlantis, HDR images tends toward the more subdued, balanced use of background imagery to create realistic-looking immersive 360-degree environments. But, because the full range of lighting exposures are embedded into an HDR image, that same image can also serve as a light source for the scene, creating highly convincing ambient lighting on the surfaces of the 3D model.

What does all this mean, then? Simplicity! Select your HDR image in the Perspective Inspector: Environment settings: Background settings, then click on the HDRI button to turn on HDR lighting and adjust the intensity. Optionally, you can still add a heliodon (with or without shadows and lens flare) to create additional daylighting effects in an HDRI-lit scene. Now, it's your turn to download the free HDRI samples and try it out on your model in Artlantis 4.1!

New aquatic center -- rendered in Artlantis

NEW AQUATIC CENTER WILL SERVE AS A SPRINGBOARD FOR FUTURE, WORLD-CLASS ATHLETES

Paris, May 3, 2011 – The design for a new, competition aquatic center is the cornerstone of a larger athletic and field improvement project at Riverside Polytechnic High School in Riverside, California. It sits near a main entrance to the campus where several world-class athletes have launched their athletic careers. The building will start construction in the summer of 2011.

© Evan Troxel

Conceptually, the design of the center is based upon the movement of competitive swimmers and their proving grounds – the lanes of the pool. High, floating roofs cover the main program of the complex. Each roof form was generated by deriving a simplified diagram from the front and side views of the butterfly stroke, which led to the main butterfly roof over the entry and undulating canopy over the bleachers.

© Evan Troxel

Designed by Evan Troxel using a combination of tools including SketchUp and Bonzai3D for the building, and Revit for the site landscaping and hardscaping, the model was rendered in Artlantis. “I use a variety of tools depending on what I need at the time, and all of these modeling applications work with Artlantis,” Troxel said. “I love how I only have to learn one rendering program that all of my other tools can talk to,” he continued.

© Evan Troxel

The aquatic center includes a 50m pool, locker rooms, shower and dressing room area with a concession stand and ticket booth building, and a mechanical pump building for a state-of-the-art microturbine water heating system. There are also outdoor showers, an expansive pool deck for tournament booths and spectators, storage, and a swimming coaches office. All of this is surrounded by a custom-formed, poured-in-place concrete panel wall enclosure primarily for security, and will also be utilized for graphics and signage. Given that the aquatic center will become the new ‘front door’ to the campus, it will certainly make a strong first impression and a statement to the surrounding community.

About Evan Troxel

Evan Troxel is an educator and architectural designer specializing in public works projects that include K-12 schools, community college and university projects, as well as civic and other institutional projects in development at HMC Architects in Southern California. He has taught the 3D design component for first and second year architecture undergraduates and first year graduate students at Cal Poly Pomona’s school of architecture for the last ten years. He has also taught architectural building information modeling (BIM) in Mt. San Antonio College’s architecture department, the community college program that feeds into Cal Poly’s architecture program.

Inspiring Artlantis success stories from Revit users

Hat tip to Athol Phillips of iRender for alerting us to a number of Revit and Artlantis success stories in South Africa. MEG Architects of Limpopo, South Africa has developed its experience and expertise in a variety of building categories, including medical, educational, offices, retail, civic, religious, industrial and residential (high and medium density as well as luxury dwellings). "Design models are generated in Revit and subsequently transferred to Artlantis for rendering, quicker than a client can blink an eye. There is realism of the scheme, finely illustrated," Sydney Lefifi says.

John Langenhoven, an Associate at Impendulo Design Architects in Johannesburg, relied heavily on Artlantis Studio when designing the new, 24,000 sqm campus-style office complex for International Auditors, KPMG in Johannesburg. "The interoperability between Artlantis Studio and Revit enables our design team to venture beyond our wildest creative dreams. This process is facilitated by the simple, yet effective Revit to Artlantis Plug-in, which includes support for the Autodesk 2010 product line," Langenhoven said.

Dale Steele of Entity Architects in Johannesburg says, "The ability to easily and quickly take a 3D model from Revit into Artlantis is invaluable to our practice. What would otherwise have taken days, in hours we can now produce an image capable of not only visualizing our objectives, but surpassing our clients expectations." He goes on to say, "Artlantis has served an integral part in the process of creating architecture within our practice. The software has become a vital tool for expressing and presenting our design ideas to our clients. It allows us to convey our intentions and the three dimensionality of a design, as well as the role of light, materials and the impact of these on certain spaces."

We hope that other Revit users will be inspired by these committed Artlantis fans in South Africa.
